Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
