The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
