Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
