Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the position in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we want to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to canon law will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and concealment."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a relationship and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," they commented.

Hickey concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
