Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
